Nihon Falcom’s 40th anniversary live concert held a surprise for Trails fans in the West. Four unreleased games in the Legend of Heroes series, Trails from Zero, Trails to Azure, Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails, and Trails into Reverie, will all be remastered and localized for Western markets across 2022 and 2023.
To understand the significance of this announcement, we must look at the story arcs that make up the Legend of Heroes series. This long-standing franchise is set in the continent of Zemuria, with its story spanning several generations of characters, some of which make appearances in various titles. The story takes place across three massive narrative arcs: the Liberl Arc, the Crossbell Arc, and the Erebonia Arc.
You might be familiar with the last arc, consisting of the four Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel games. All 4 Cold Steel titles are available on current-gen consoles – except for the Nintendo Switch, which has so far only received ports of Cold Steel 3 and 4.
While you can jump into the Cold Steel series and generally have a good time, you’d be missing out on some key events that took place in the previous arcs. There are also characters from these arcs that appear during various intervals. For those who’d want to experience the whole story, you’d be out of luck (unless you use the fanmade localizations). That’s all about to change.
Two out of the four announced remasters – Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure – are from the Crossbell Arc, the one that precedes the Erebonia Arc. Whether you’ve finished the Cold Steel series or are waiting for these games to come to the West before diving in, there’s finally a light of hope. Trails from Zero is aiming for a Fall 2022 release, while Trails to Azure will be with us sometime in 2023.
The third announced title, Trails into Reverie, is an epilogue game to the long-running Crossbell and Erebonia Arcs. Reverie will wrap up both by bringing together protagonists Lloyd Bannings and Rean Schwarzer. The title also brings C into the fray, a brand-new character shrouded in mystery. This game is also planned for a 2023 release.
The final remaster, The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails, is a spin-off game in the Trails series. Originally released as an action RPG on the PSP in Japan, its gameplay is reminiscent of the Ys series. Though it’s a spin-off that has little to do with the stories of the core Trails games, it’s still another Japan-only game heading to the west in 2023.
It may seem like a long wait, but we finally will get to experience more of the Legend of Heroes series like our Japanese gamer counterparts. At the moment, all four games appear to be confirmed for PC, but there’s no doubt that PS4 and Switch versions will be coming as well.
